How many times have you expressed your commitment to a great big, hairy, scary goal only to fail at it right out of the gate -- almost the instant you start?
Well I have!
For example, I'm always trying to give up wine, because I would like to have more energy, lose some weight and cut back on my sugar intake.
Everytime I attempt this magnificent feat (BTW, I REALLY LOVE wine and giving it up truly feels insurmountable), I make a big, grand plan and announce it to my friends and family hoping that they will help hold me accountable.
I say to them, "I'm giving up wine this month! So don't tempt me with any trips to the wine country or invites to the wine collective!"
The funny thing is that this never works and they all know it! We all end up having a good laugh, because I do this A LOT and it's no secret that it doesn't work for me, but everybody plays along as if this will be the time it finally happens.
I fail almost the instant I start EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. 5:00 PM hits and the habit kicks in and I can't shake it.
Why is it so hard?
Because in giving up wine cold turkey, I'm trying to do something REALLY BIG that's REALLY HARD all AT ONCE. Trying to change a habit like this is almost certainly going to fail, because it's TOO BIG -- the habit is too strong. I love a good glass of wine at 5pm and it's a habit I've had for years.
Why am I telling you this?
If you also have BIG goals for yourself that feel insurmountable, I encourage you to set a new goal to improve by just ONE percent each week. That's all it takes to change behavior or chip away at a big goal! Before you know it, you'll be feeling the sweet joy of accomplishment!
Using this philosophy, I've been able to cut back on my wine consumption little by little and it's actually working! The habit is having less of a hold on me as I feel the positive rewards from cutting back.
