People often ask me how I built my network of thousands, and my answer is always the same...
A lot of networking!
I gotta be honest, I worked hard to build the network I have today.
You are responsible for managing your career, which means you must make an extra effort to speak up and ask for what you want. Advocating for opportunities at work so that you build bridges, position yourself as a leader, and maintain a good rapport with your colleagues can be challenging. You might worry about the consequences of speaking up — how people will react, what they will think of you, and how they will behave.
For me, going to a networking event kind of feels like going to the gym. Once I'm there, I'm happy. But getting me to go can take a real kick in the ass.
I'd rather pour myself a glass of wine and binge on the latest episodes of The Americans instead of going through the hassle of putting on makeup, driving across town, and spending an evening mingling with strangers.
But I do it anyway.
